A while back I included an article on this topic in my newsletter and it was one of my most popular articles! I just checked with all of the jurisdictions to see if there have been any changes. Here is the latest information from around the metro area on this side of the river.

Now, remember, condo and home owners associations may have their own limits, and most condos also have lists of restricted breeds. But here are the regulations as set by each of the following jurisdictions:

In Alexandria and Arlington you can have 3 dogs.

In Fairfax County, the zoning regs base the limitations on the size of the property, as follows:

  • 1 to 2 = No requirement
  • 3 to 4 = 12,500 square feet
  • 5 to 6 = 20,000 square feet
  • 7 or more = 25,000 square feet plus 5,000 SF feet for each additional dog above 7

In Prince William County, you can have up to 4 dogs without a kennel license.

In Loudoun County, like Fairfax, the limitations are based on the size of the property, unless you have a kennel license, as follows:

  • up to 2 dogs on a lot up to 15,000 SF
  • up to 4 dogs on lots between 15,000-20,000 SF
  • up to 6 dogs on lots of at least 20,000SF, with an additional 2 dogs allowed for every additional 10,000 SF
